West Covina High School students took home top honors last weekend at a three-day Southern California competition that required participants to design and build boats run by solar energy.
The high school’s team earned first place overall in the rookie division at Metropolitan Water District’s 12th annual Solar Cup at Lake Skinner in Riverside County and bested their competitors in the endurance leg of the challenge.
“It was exciting because you work so hard on it, you put a lot into it and you see it come together and you’re smiling the whole time,” said student Fransisco Hernandez, 18. “We just built it and went for it, it was a long shot, but I guess we made it.”
