ARCADIA >> The construction of a 1.5-mile pipeline from Peck Road Water Conservation Park to the San Gabriel River in Irwindale is an attempt to inject more water into the receding underground aquifer.

As the region enters the fourth year of a drought, the county Flood Control District wants to capture more rainwater but not in the twin lakes of Peck Park served by two mountain washes, but rather in a portion of the porous, 58-mile San Gabriel River.

Since the mid-1980s, the county has used inflatable rubber dams installed in key sections of the river alongside the 605 Freeway to pool runoff and repercolate it into the receding Main San Gabriel Basin aquifer, hundreds of feet below the surface.
