Waterwise competition under way in San Gabriel Valley

While people around the country are challenging one another to the ice bucket challenge to raise awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease, the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District is calling on 18 cities to compete in its new Water Smart City Challenge to raise awareness about the California drought.

Instead of dumping buckets of ice-cold water over the heads of local council members, cities in the district can sign up for the water-conservation challenge for a shot at winning grant money.

The first three cities to complete eight of 12 requirements will receive $50,000 in grants for sustainable watershed projects, such as installing stormwater-catching devices or implementing drought-tolerant landscaping.
